On-site tape backup
Tape backup is an excellent choice for those situations where you need to maintain archival, point-in-time, copies of data such as at month and quarter end. It can be particularly useful for accountants needing to be able to go back to previous versions of tax returns or source documents.
Backup tapes are easily transported off-site for storage and disaster recovery.
On-site disk backup
Disk based backup can, in some circumstances, offer significantly increased speed when compared to tape backup. This is particually noticable when it comes time to restore data. Disk based backup, since it lacks the portibility of tape, is often used in conjuction with tape or cloud based backup to provide off-site disaster recovery.
Off-site / Cloud backup
Off-Site/cloud backup provides both data back and in addition disaster recovery protection without having to transport tapes. It is often used in conjunction with disk and tape backup. A tape would be used to create an archival copy at month and quarter end, disk would be used to maintain a local copy of the backup to provide speedy restoration of data, and cloud would be used to maintain an off-site copy of the data for DR purposes.
